The road to recovery: Panel on post-traumatic stress disorder

Keynote speaker: Lieutenant-General The Honourable Roméo Dallaire (Retd)

Thanks to the continued generous support of the Shawn and Khush Singh Distinguished Lecture Series, the Faculty of Social Sciences is pleased to welcome Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire on campus. Recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa in 2002, General Dallaire will talk about his journey living with PTSD following his time in Rwanda during the genocide.

Immediately following General Dallaire’s presentation, a panel of experts from the Faculty of Social Sciences will speak on the biological, psychological and environmental factors that play a causal role in the development of this disorder. The challenges members of the military and civilians face during recovery from PTSD will also be discussed.

About Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire

A decorated lieutenant-general and former Canadian senator, Roméo Dallaire served with the Canadian Armed Forces for 35 years, was force commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda, is the author of three books and leads the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative and the Roméo Dallaire Foundation. His 2016 bestselling book, Waiting for First Light: My Ongoing Battle with PTSD, offers a no-holds-barred self-portrait of Mr. Dallaire and his ongoing battle with PTSD.

The Shawn and Khush Singh Distinguished Lecture Series brings some of the world’s top academics, leaders, entrepreneurs and public servants to the campus, providing an opportunity for students, alumni and residents of the National Capital Region to hear from renowned speakers on important topics related to health, public policy, international affairs and geopolitical issues. This lecture series is sponsored by Shawn Singh (BSocSc ’98), proud University of Ottawa alumnus, and his wife, Khush Singh.
