Honey, I Stressed the Kids: The Stress Response and Parenting in Fish

Faculty of Science Lecture

Katie Gilmour, Faculté des sciences | Katie Gilmour, Faculty of Science

Fish, like humans, want to give their offspring the best chance of survival and success in life. Male smallmouth and largemouth bass care for their offspring, fanning the fertilized eggs to aerate them and defending embryos and larvae from predators until the young develop anti-predator strategies. To be able to devote as much energy as necessary to these tasks, parental male bass suppress their stress response. Female bass do not care for their young. However, stress in female bass seems to serve as a signal, shaping the behaviour and stress responses of the young through effects on the eggs that are as yet not understood. So, while females may “stress the kids” to improve the chances of offspring survival, the goal of parental males is to keep calm and carry on.

About Dr. Katie Gilmour

Katie Gilmour is a comparative physiologist who studies stress in fish, focusing in particular on the interactions between behaviour (e.g., social interactions) and physiology (e.g., consequences of stress). She also enjoys teaching, in particular, introducing undergraduate students to the mysteries of animal physiology. After earning a bachelor’s in biology at McMaster University, she went on to study flight muscle in bumblebees for her PhD at the University of Cambridge. The switch from insect muscle to fish physiology occurred during her postdoctoral studies at uOttawa and McMaster. After holding positions at the University of Glasgow and Carleton University, she joined the Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa in 2004.
