Faculty of Engineering Dean’s Luncheon presents A Wild Canyon Research Ride
Hydraulics expert Colin Rennie takes a trip down the Fraser River.

The 2015 Alumni Week is now over. We look forward to seeing you in 2016!

Colin Rennie isn’t afraid to get wet. As a civil engineering professor, he was a key member of a prestigious team of researchers who rafted some 500 kilometres down the Fraser River, an adventure that included wild rides through the breakneck waters of 42 bedrock canyons.

Following the route taken by legendary explorers Simon Fraser and Alexander Mackenzie, Dr. Rennie’s team surveyed the flow velocity and depth of the mighty Fraser—the longest river in British Columbia and one of the most majestic and treacherous in Canada. Their unexpected and remarkable findings include a three-dimensional map of the complex flow pattern of water racing through bedrock canyons. This information, along with their other conclusions, gives us a more profound understanding of how mountain canyons erode and lowland river valleys evolve, and the consequences of this erosion and evolution on river stability, flood risk and habitats in and around rivers.

Join Dr. Rennie on his breathtaking journey of discovery. It promises to be a wild ride. And unlike our intrepid engineer, you won’t get a drop of water on you.
